Framing a view

When you are at the very beginning of your design journey and are starting to consider spatial planning and windows and doors placements, it’s so important to think about what your windows will look out onto. And connecting with nature is a key part of feeling content and happy within our homes. In a previous notebook entry I explored the 6 ingredients for a happy home as outlined in a UK scientific study of 4000 people by Resi, an architectural studio, titled ‘The Science of a Happy Home’. It found that happiness levels were affected by the view to the outside more so than other living factors such as sunlight level, ventilation or light.

Another reason to frame a view is to create a focal point within the room. This can be a beautiful design element, particularly if you are lucky enough to look out onto a tree or garden. Using larger windows or doors can create an indoor/outdoor experience which can contribute to more peaceful and intentional living.

If your home doesn’t look onto nature, and instead looks onto a wall, can you introduce a climber or vine that you can look out onto? Or add a small tree to your balcony area? This way you can connect with nature everyday.
