3 steps to reach your goal

It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of not progressing with goals that are important in your life. But taking action doesn’t have to be hard. Let’s simplify the steps you need to take.

All too often we make life much more complicated than it needs to be. We let our primitive brain rule our thoughts, even if they’re not helpful.

Instead, we can get clarity on what we want to achieve in our lives, and the simple steps we need to take to make it happen.

Step 1 — Define your goal

The first step to making progress with any goal is to get clear on what it actually is. Get as specific as you can. When it’s some vague idea it’s easy to get distracted or not have clear focus on how you’re going to achieve it. For example, if you want a beautiful home get specific on what it actually looks like. What style is it? What is the colour palette? What type of flooring does it have? A simple way to help you get clarity on your dream home is to create a vision board. Easy ways to do this are creating a specific saved folder on Instagram called ‘Dream Home’ — even better give it a name, such as ‘Hinterland Retreat’. You can also use Pinterest or Canva to create your vision board. Put it somewhere that you see every day to keep you inspired and motivated to take action.

Step 2 — Make a plan

You will only ever achieve your goal if you take pro-active steps to make it happen. Instead of talking, worrying or even feeling sorry for yourself about it, write down the steps you need to get the results you want. Again, it’s important to get specific. If you want to learn a new skill, write down what you need to do to achieve this, which might include clearing time out of your schedule. Time is often a barrier to achieving goals. Look through how you spend your time right now. What can you delete, delegate or defer from your current to-do list to allow time to achieve your goal? Take a look on your smart phone of how much time you spend on apps, such as Instagram. Sometimes it can be quite confronting to look at that number, especially when you realise how much else you could have achieved during that time. Set time limits (and alarms) for certain activities (Instagram…) so they don’t hold you back from achieving your goals.

Step 3 — Take action

The only way you’re ever going to get the results you want in your life is by taking action. While it’s good to have dreams and ideas, and things you want to achieve in your life, if you can’t get motivated to actually take the steps to make them happen you will always live with a level of frustration and disappointment. You might be thinking, why can’t I declutter my home? Why can’t I sort that room out? Why can’t I make my business idea happen? The easiest way to take action is to break down your goal into small steps and schedule them into your diary. The idea of decluttering, styling or redecorating your entire home might feel overwhelming. However, break it down into small steps, clear space in your schedule and aim for small improvements every day. When it comes to decluttering, allocate 15 minutes to improve one space, such as a sock drawer. Soon you will gain momentum and realise that making progress isn’t so hard. Fifteen minutes a day is achievable. And the compound interest of small improvements is bigger than you think. There are also times when it pays to take massive action too. Clear a weekend or a week to achieve your goal and impress yourself. The good news is that once you take one small step, you will want to do it again and again.
