5 of My Favourite Books for Interior Spaces

5 of My Favourite Books for Interior Spaces - Interior Design Books - Natalie Walton

When searching for interior inspiration, I have always gravitated towards books more than anything else. As an avid book lover, this isn’t too surprising, but I find that especially when it comes to interiors, books offer richer inspiration and spark more meaningful connections than what I find in a Pinterest search.

It wasn’t easy to narrow these down, but here are five of my current favourite design books. These are the ones I keep within reach of my desk, and whose images have had a huge influence on my own design sense and creative work.

Japanese Interiors by Mihoko Iida

Japanese Interiors by Mihoko Iida

1. JAPANESE INTERIORS

This is one that I’ve only picked up recently, but have already found myself coming back to many times. I love drawing inspiration from places that are very different to where I live here in Australia, as the imagery and details tend to spark new and unexpected ideas. This book is written by Mihoko Iida, the executive features editor of Vogue Japan, and is filled with inspiration for beautiful, simplified spaces.

2. WABI INSPIRATIONS

If you love the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, this book by Axel Vervoordt is a must-read, as it’s full of inspiration for moody, authentic and ‘perfectly imperfect’ spaces that create a sense of simplicity and calm.

Portraits of Interiors by Axel Vervoordt

3. PORTRAITS OF INTERIORS

This is another favourite by Axel Vervoordt that showcases a selection of his works over the years. He has such a timeless aesthetic that I return to over and over again for inspiration.

A white facade, five floors and an open door. by Rosa Park and Rich Stapleton

4. A WHITE FACADE, FIVE FLOORS AND AN OPEN DOOR.

This book was created to capture a beautiful space called Graanmarkt 13 in Antwerp, a traditional Belgian townhouse that operates as a boutique hotel as well as the home of the owners. It’s clear that so much care and intention went into every decision, and the result proves that it’s less about what you add to a space, and more about what you’re willing to subtract or take away. If you love simplified spaces, you’ll find endless inspiration in these pages.

Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses: Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu by Barbara Buhler Lynes and Judy Lopez

5. GEORGIA O’KEEFFE AND HER HOUSES

When searching for fresh design ideas, I often look to books that don’t necessarily fall under interior design. One of my favourites is this book featuring the iconic homes of artist Georgia O’Keeffe. All of her works, her homes in particular, are perfectly timeless, which is always a quality I’m looking for.
